In this particular case study if I were the administrator of the 15 Windows XP Professional portable computers in the sales department of the company, what I should do is to configure the IP properties of the portable computers so that they have an alternate configuration.By having an alternate configuration I can ensure that the users can connect portable computers to their home networks when they are at home and to the company network when they are in the office.

Configure the IP properties of the portable computers so that they have an alternate configuration.
1. Start the Network Connections Folder.
2. Right-click the connection you want to configure, and then click Properties.
3. If the User Account Control dialog box appears, confirm that the action it displays is what you want, and then click Continue.
4. Do one of the following:
You can assigned IP settings automatically, click Obtain an IP address automatically, and then click OK.
If you want to specify an IP address or a Domain Name Service (DNS) server address, do the following:
1. Click Use the following IP address, and then in IP address, type the IP address, and an appropriate subnet mask and default gateway address.
2. Click Use the following DNS server addresses, and then in Preferred DNS server and Alternate DNS server, type the addresses of the primary and secondary DNS servers.
Additional considerations
Use automated IP settings (DHCP) whenever possible for all connections because they eliminate the need to configure settings such as IP address, DNS server address, and WINS server address.
The Alternate Configuration settings specify a second set of IP settings that are used when a DHCP server is not available. This is very useful for portable computer users who often switch between two different network environments such as DHCP and static IP network environments.

To ensure the users that they can connect the portable computers to their home networks when they are at home and to the company when they are at the office, the IP Addresses of each portable computers must be configured. With this method, there will be an alternate configuration and this method will not change the configuration of home computers on users’ home networks. Also in this method, you will not change the administrative privileges of sales department users.

The 15 portable computers just obtain automatic IP address when they are in the company and the sales department is unable to connect to users who manually configured IP address tho their home network. the 15 portable computers should be given diffirent IP address to avoid IP conflict when they are at home and automatically connected when they are in the company…

Run the Windows XP Network Setup Wizard manually on all the portable computers, as well as the different home computers. This sets up the Home Network or Domain. When setting up the home network, make sure to enable simple file sharing for files and printers.
To access another computer on the network from your portable computer
1. Click Start, click Run, and then type two backslashes and the name of the other computer: \\computername
2. Click OK. A folder containing the shared folders and resources on the other computer will open.
To connect with an IP address instead of a computer’s name
1. Click Start, click Run, and then type the IP address of the computer you are connecting to: \\192.168.0.3
2. Click OK.
